Capcom’s fantasy RPG from 2012 was a surprise hit and an expansion was announced called ‘Dark Arisen’ which is scheduled to release April 23rd 2013 in North America and in Europe on April 26th.
Fans of Dragon’s Dogma may be disgruntled with this expansion as the only way to play this content is to buy another version of the game. Either another physical copy of the game or buying a new version that will be available via Xbox Live or PSN. In an attempt to appease those fans Capcom has stated that those who had the original copy will receive the following:
- Unlimited Ferrystones (the method of fast travelling in the game)
- 100,000 Rift crystals
- Gransys Armour Pack, a dlc which offers six new costumes
The game will also be retailing for a lower price on the day of the release with the announced pricing for the physical and digital version being $39.99/€29.00/£19.99.
“I get it guys. We went round and round with the team on this topic as it would have been a preferred option from our standpoint too. As it turns out, I’m sorry but unfortunately there were major technical limitations that couldn’t allow for a digital upgrade path. The original game was just not designed to be expanded (no hooks in the original code) and so a full-game delivery mechanism was the only option.
We also tried to explore a number of mechanisms to try and otherwise put this full product in original owners hands at a discount digitally but we would have run afowl of a few first party policies (not any first party’s fault, t’was our fault). So instead, we’re packing more than $20 worth of value in digital rewards for existing users: 100K rift crystals (which in DDDA have a LOT more uses than they did in DD vanilla) the Gransys armor pack and the unlimited Ferrystone. We hope this will be a sufficent “thank you” for being part of the first wave of Dragon’s Dogma fans given the development limitations we had.
Thanks again for your continued support and I hope to see you in Gransys in April.”
In addition to the new underground realm the expansion boasts other new features:
- 25 new enemies
- A more intuitive menu system
- Easier travel
- More skills
- Over 100 new pieces of equipment
- 14 new augments
- Character classes now have a new tier of skills
- New tiers of equipment enhancement
- More options for character customisations
- Item appraisal
- The option to have Japanese voice over
This is the Official description of the new content:
“Just off the Gransys mainland is the cursed Bitterblack Isle and it is here that gamers will discover an underground realm, complete with new terrifying foes to face and incredible treasure to find as they embark on an all new quest. Owners of the original Dragon’s Dogma will be able to export their existing characters and all other saved data, to continue their journey as the Arisen and face this new threat that has emerged from the cavernous depths. Players will be able to take their characters to new heights, with brand new high-level skills and augments as well as all new weapons and armour sets. For those that missed Dragon’s Dogma the first time around, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen provides the opportunity to start their journey from the very beginning before tackling the all new content.” Source
Hopefully the additions and gameplay improvements are enough to justify this to fans who were anticipating the expansion, though to many it may feel like a slap in the face. However newcomers are getting a great deal with a complete package at a lower retail price.
