After Ubisoft announced that they’re already working on the next major installment of the Assassin’s Creed series, a flood of rumors naturally began to surge around the internet. However, if one anonymous source is to be believed, the next game might have players sporting eye-patches and shouting “Shiver me timbers!”

According to Kotaku, an anonymous tipster provided them with marketing materials for a game called Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The materials included a poster featuring a white-hooded assassin battling a bunch of menacing-looking pirates aboard a ship. The Kotaku tipster claims that the poster will start appearing on store walls as early as March 4th which would imply Ubisoft plans to formally announce the game around that time if the rumors of Black Flag’s existence are indeed true.

Ubisoft has been staying tight-lipped in regards to the new game’s details other than that it will come out sometime within the next fiscal year (basically at any point between April, 2013 and March, 2014) and that it will feature both a new setting and a new protagonist. Black Flag’s pirate-themed setting seems to fit the bill and the assassin featured in the poster looks nothing like ACIII protagonist Connor (eagle-eyed viewers will notice the poster’s assassin has lighter skin and what looks like light facial hair).

The tipster’s information is also supported by a rumor that cropped up earlier this month in which a Reddit user supposedly snuck a peak at a woman’s marketing powerpoint presentation while sitting behind her on an airplane. The presentation listed several game titles including one labeled as “AC4: Black Flags” which was set for a holiday, 2013 release.

Just to reiterate, all this is nothing but hearsay until Ubisoft officially unveils the next game in the series. For now, all we can do is wait and see if these rumors about a pirate-themed Assassin’s Creed adventure end up being true.

Update: A new screenshot and several new details have emerged regarding Black Flag’s story and development. The image (which can be seen below) doesn’t really reveal much, but according to Examiner.com, Black Flag will be a prequel to Assassin’s Creed III starring Edward Kenway, Haytham Kenway’s father and Connor’s grandfather. In addition to being an assassin, Edward is also a privateer and occasional pirate. Black Flag will be set in the Carribean and will feature locales such as Cuba, Jamaica, and the Bahamas.
