Naughty Dog has released a free to play client for Uncharted 3 multiplayer on the PlayStation Network for people to download. Like other free to play games the multiplayer will be limited for free members, but they will be able to purchase upgrades and expand level caps. The Uncharted 3 free to play multiplayer is limited to level 15 which will not let you unlock everything, players can pay to up their level cap as well as purchase various items such as tournament tickets, costumes, and more.

Free to play users will also not be able to play co-op adventure or co-op arena. Naughty Dog also announced that Uncharted 3 and the game of the year addition are now available digitally via the PlayStation Network Store. Naughty Dog’s lead game designer Robert Cogburn told Joystiq “We’ve looked at some models for other games, though nothing really played too great an influence on us, we kind of just broke down the game a la carte. You can get the single-player, or the competitive, or the co-op. Or you can get the ‘Game of the Year’ edition for all of it. “The idea behind trying these different options – or business models, arguably – is we’re just trying to see what people might gravitate to. We’re going to be keeping a close eye on this and it will be interesting to see what type of model ends up being the most popular.”

If only more developers would take this route with their multiplayer and single player games. I think we should be able to purchase single player and multiplayer modes as separate products. Hopefully Naughty Dog’s actions here are a stepping stone in that direction.
