Arena.Xlsm – A Turn-Based RPG Played in Microsoft Excel Scott Adam Gordon March 25, 2013 Uncategorized Chartered accountant Cary Walkin has combined his knowledge of spreadsheets with a passion for video games to create a surprisingly deep RPG based entirely in Microsoft Excel! I wouldn’t have believed it either. An application so dull it makes typing “80085″ into a calculator seem amusing (try it). But I’ll be damned – Microsoft‘s premier spreadsheet program has delivered a fun experience. Arena.Xlsm was developed over a 5 month period while Walkin was completing his Business Administration masters in Toronto, Canada. The 1MB xlsm file boasts an “emotional story with 4 different endings [...] over 1000 possible item combinations and attributes” and “36 achievements”. Arena.Xlsm is available as a free download from Walkins blog and is compatible with Windows versions of Excel 2007 and 2010. If nothing else, it’s an Excel-lent idea. Check it out here.
