Rockstar warns Xbox 360 users to refrain from installing disc two (the “play” disc) before playing Grand Theft Auto 5. Installing the disc weakens the performance of streaming textures and creates common pop-in to many of the surroundings. For those looking to finally experience Grand Theft Auto 5, the optional 7.8GB of data on disc two sounds like something to keep separate from the hard drive.

Rockstar is expected to talk more about the problem later, but until then, Rockstar Support tweeted the following,

“For optimal performance, we recommend not installing that disc.”

The folks at Digital Foundry tested the disc and discovered instances where the objects and textures frequently pop-in. They reassure everyone that nothing is game-breaking, just off-putting to see in the world. As to their beliefs on why this is occurring,

“So what’s the story here? Well, optimal streaming is achieved by making us of all the available bandwidth in the system. Why stream just from the hard drive when you can run in data simultaneously from both the disc and the HDD? Based on what we’re seeing on the Xbox 360 version, perhaps running both DVD and HDD assets from just the one source slows down access times, impacting streaming performance. It’s not game-breaking stuff, but it does take you out of the moment when it does manifest and for that reason we can’t recommend installing the play disc.”

GTA 5 Pop-in

No news has come out regarding the PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto 5, however it will be important to keep an eye out regarding the downloadable version from the PSN store as Xbox Live does not have a digital version available.
