The Halo 4 spin-off title Halo: Spartan Assault has been limited thus far to Windows 8 platforms, being particularly designed for touch interfaces such as the Microsoft Surface tablet. Following the addition of controller support for the game in August of 2013, console versions of the game have been announced for release on both existing Xbox platforms this December.

Following the adventures of Halo 4: Spartan Ops character Sarah Palmer, Halo: Spartan Assault is a top-down shooter offering a faster-paced Halo experience. Originally single-player only, the original 30 missions from Spartan Ops and the DLC missions from the Operation Hydra expansion will see the addition of an online co-op mode in this expanded release. Spartan Assault multiplayer will be system-restricted, with no cross play between Xbox One and Xbox 360 servers, and requires an Xbox Live Gold membership.
