Thanksgiving is coming up tomorrow in the United States so we here at VGU have decided to compile a list of ten games you can play with your family while you celebrate the holiday. These games are based around couch co-op and/or a good family-friendly environment your parents would approve of.
*Editor’s Note: Some series may be older than the 7th generation but we’re sticking to titles that had a launch this past gen.*
10. Sesame Street TV
Thanksgiving is a great holiday for children (really everything is great for children) so if you have a large family gathering, you are bound to run into kids who want something to do. Popping in Sesame Street TV for Kinect on the Xbox 360 is a great diversion for those children and can be fun for the young at heart as well.
Sesame Street TV takes episodes and situations from the iconic children’s television show and lets players interact via the Kinect. The show is based around interactivity so this approach actually works pretty well (when the Kinect works, of course).
Whether this is a way to get the kiddies to do something other than yell and scream at you or a way to bond with them by playing together, it’s definitely family-friendly enough for Thanksgiving.
9. Just Dance
Dancing games have become extremely popular in the past few years and the ability to learn new moves, show off your stuff, or just have fun with friends via motion controls is a great way to kill some time. The Just Dance series has been incredibly popular for Ubisoft and there are tons of games to choose from.
There are games centered on children’s music, specific artists (like Michael Jackson), and of course the regular numbered series that takes popular contemporary music and lets you dance to it. Regardless of the Just Dance game that you pick, it will definitely be a lot of fun to have with your family.
8. Wii Music
Wii Music allows players to take on challenges on a variety of musical instruments outside of the standard guitar and drum configuration of other music games. Instruments like the violin, piano, and saxophone feature into the free form music game.
Wii Music gives players the opportunity to experiment with different instruments and sounds without getting a bad score by encouraging players in “Jam Mode” to play along with songs in their own way, as opposed to having to hit specific notes like in Guitar Hero or Rock Band.
7. Guitar Hero
Music games in general are a great way to bring your family into the gaming fold (especially if they aren’t really gamers) and the Guitar Hero series has been extremely popular since its inception in 2005. The game allows you to play along to the bass or guitar portions of popular songs and gives you a grade based on your performance (Guitar Hero: World Tour added drums and vocals in response to the success of Rock Band).
There have been several games in the Guitar Hero franchise and the music contained within come from popular artists like the Ramones, Sum 41, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many more. There are several difficulty settings for players and a face off mode for a little family competition.
6. Little Big Planet
The PlayStation exclusive platformer franchise Little Big Planet is a great way to spend some time with family on Thanksgiving and have a ton of fun in the process. The game features fantastic customization options that allow players to create their own levels and upload them to the PlayStation Network for other users to explore.
Obviously that also means there is a wealth of online content that can be browsed and the camaraderie of working together in multiplayer to achieve a common goal is a great way to bring the family together. Up to four players can play together locally and that makes this a great couch co-op game.
