The shooter genre is one of the most prolific in video games today and many of the biggest video game franchises are shooter franchises. Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo, Killzone, Gears of War, and more are all great examples of big shooter franchises that have developed in the past ten years (or so) and made a big impact on gaming. Here are VGU’s nominations for the best shooter (first or third person) from 2013.

Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4

The Battlefield franchise has gained some serious momentum in the last few years and has finally started to give the mammoth that is Call of Duty a run for its money. Battlefield 4’s slightly more realistic and gritty tone, coupled with its impressive graphics and stellar multiplayer, make it a great choice for shooter of the year.

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Ghosts

It’s almost impossible to discuss shooters nowadays without a nod to the Call of Duty franchise. This year’s installment brought a totally new story to the table and upped the ante with an improved co-op experience in Squads and Extinction and the same old Call of Duty multiplayer that so many people play every year.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

Blood Dragon

Easily the most humorous and “out of left field” game to be nominated, Blood Dragon was a standalone expansion for Far Cry 3 that had very little in common with the actual game. The downloadable game put players into the shoes of the Cyber Commando Rex Powercolt as he attempted to stop the evil Colonel Sloane while navigating the neon 80′s-themed open world that the game had to offer.

BioShock Infinite

BioShock

The BioShock franchise has been a beloved shooter ever since the first title came out in 2007. BioShock Infinite took players out of the underwater city of Rapture and brought them to the floating city of Columbia to take on a whole new plot with new characters, new villains, and a completely new city to explore.

Crysis 3

Crysis 3

Crytek and EA’s gorgeous-looking shooter franchise returned for a third installment in 2013 and brought with it all of the fantastic graphics that the CryEngine has to offer. Crysis 3 took players back to New York City to continue to the evil CELL corporation and the alien menace that is the Ceph.
