Sometimes sub plots and non-main characters are so intriguing that we want to see more of their story. We want to expand the universe of a favorite entertainment franchise and see what else lies beyond the original story that a series tells. Video games have had a number of successful spin off series so we asked the VGU staff what spin-offs they would like to see in the future.

I am a big fan of superheroes, particularly those from DC Comics.  Superman and Batman are two of my favorite heroes and while I definitely want to see more games that feature those characters, I’d love to also see one that put you outside of the role of a superhero. Sure most gamers want to be able to be the super powered hero (or villain) in a game but I’d like to see a game where you take control of a character like Commissioner Gordon and see it from the other side.

Gordon Spin Off

The game would still heavily feature the heroes and villains of a particular mythos but (similar to Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD tv show) it would put a spotlight on normal human characters. A character like Gordon is highly recognizable but even a new character could work depending on the particular mythos that the game is using.

I would think that a game like this would work best as a detective type game (similar in some ways to LA Noire) but with that superhero/science fiction twist that makes us love those worlds so much. The dynamic between hero and cop/normal human character could be a really interesting one to dive into and it could be a ton of fun to play.

I am and always will be an avid Gears of War fan. Gears of War will remain as one of my all-time favorite titles and I even enjoyed some of the memorable moments from Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3. Being disappointed by Gears of War: Judgement, I would love for the franchise to take an interesting twist in the form of a spin-off title.

Beast mode, the RAAM DLC story, and on other separate occasions, we have been able to assume the role of a Locust. However, I would love to see a Gears of War title which focuses solely on a Locust character. This would apply for the entire campaign and other modes – only allowing for playable COG character in the multiplayer. Personally, I would want to have the story focus on General RAMM, as I felt the DLC didn’t offer full justice that this memorable character deserved.

I’d love for the title to center on the origins of the Gears story; allowing the player to assume the role of the Locust during Emergence Day. The character doesn’t necessarily have to be General RAAM, as it could also be General Karn; the locust who engineered Emergence Day. I would warmly welcome and be intrigued by the possibility of a Gears of War spin-off title.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon hit every bad 80′s action flick note it needed to.  And having done it as well as it did, I want something similar but horror themed. Give me ripoff versions of Aliens, Predator, Critters, Gremlins, and all of those like them. Throw in the classic vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein’s monster, and any other black and white horror icon they can fit in. And let’s not forget slasher favorites Freddy Kreuger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Meyers.

What they pulled off with Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon could work just as well with a horror twist to it.  And I would love to run around an open world and kill the creatures and madmen that I grew up watching. If Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare could pull it off in that world, I think the Far Cry universe could make it work well also.

That’s what the VGU staff had to say but what do you think? Let us know what gaming spin-off you would like to see in the comments below.
