The action/adventure genre has seen some fantastic games over the course of this past generation with popular franchises like Uncharted, Assassin’s Creed, inFamous, and more all beginning in the seventh gen. 2013 saw tons of great action/adventure games so here are VGU’s nominees for best action/adventure game of the year.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Assassin's Creed IV

The Assassin’s Creed series has been a big seller for Ubisoft but Assassin’s Creed III fell short of many fans’ expectations. The series needed a big comeback in 2013 and it got this in the form of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

Black Flag took the best parts of the open world Assassin’s Creed series and put those into the world of pirates in the Caribbean. The result was an incredibly fun experience that took players all over the map, fighting on land and sea, assassinating targets, and doing just about whatever they wanted to do.

The Last of Us

The Last of Us

Naughty Dog’s PlayStation 3 exclusive title has been touted far and wide as one of the best games of the year and for good reason. The post-apocalyptic action game let players take control of Joel, a man tasked with taking a little girl named Ellie across the United States to find a group called the Fireflies.

The storytelling, voice acting, action, graphics, and more made The Last of Us an incredibly fun and engaging experience. The balance of high intensity gun battles and frightening horror-esque elements played well with the superbly executed story so it’s no wonder The Last of Us is in on our list of nominees.

Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider

Reboots are always tricky and a beloved video game character like Lara Croft can be an even more difficult one to successfully reboot. However, Crystal Dynamics did a fantastic job of bringing the Tomb Raider franchise back to life.

Tomb Raider provided a fun story that followed Lara’s first real adventure before she truly becomes the character we all know. We get to see her develop into that brave, strong, and courageous character and that is a lot of fun. Add in some great graphics, fun third-person gameplay, and you’ve got a solid game.

Grand Theft Auto V

The Grand Theft Auto franchise has been a huge success that has spanned multiple consoles and taken players on all kinds of whacky and criminally insane rides over the years. Grand Theft Auto V took the action to Los Santos as players took control of three vastly different criminals: Michael, Trevor, and Franklin.

The three completely different characters helped push the story forward and the crazy twists and turns that the story took, kept players glued to their seats. The game also featured the incredibly large and dynamic world that GTA games are known so well for and included an online mode that, after a rough launch, has provided a lot of fun.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Splinter Cell

The Splinter Cell franchise has been one of the most popular to come out of the Tom Clancy series of games and the new direction that was taken with Blacklist resonated with gamers this year. The replacement of Michael Ironside with Eric Johnson was a tough pill to swallow for series veterans but Johnson did a good job of taking over as Sam Fisher.

The tried and true Splinter Cell gameplay was given even more updates and features which made this game a true standout in the action/adventure genre. The game sets the series up nicely to continue moving in new and interesting directions and it was one of the best of the year.
