Racing games allow gamers to get behind the wheel of some of the best driving machines in the world and take to the streets at high speeds. Some racing games are all about letting you go at crazy speeds and do fun stunts while others are about trying to maintain realism and give players an accurate experience. Here are VGU’s nominees for the best racing game of 2013.
Forza Motorsport 5
The Forza Motorsport series has always been about realism and trying to show off the elaborate and beautiful cars that gamers get the chance to ride around the different tracks in the game. Forza Motorsport 5 was released as a launch title exclusively for the Xbox One and was met with a lot of praise.
The game features incredibly detailed cars that beg to be inspected closer and narration from Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond of BBC’s Top Gear series that will give you more information on the cars and circuits you are racing.
Need for Speed: Rivals
The Need for Speed series has been at the forefront of arcade style racing games for quite some time and Rivals gave players a glimpse at next-gen technology when it released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game utilizes the Frostbite 3 engine and impresses with its environmental effects and graphical power.
The game itself allows players to switch back and forth between playing as a cop or a racer; with the events and goals changing depending on who you want to be. Cops are tasked with taking down racers in events and quickly responding to calls while racers are constantly trying to beat each other in crazy races around the open world. The game also allows for seamless integration between the multiplayer and single player that really blurs the lines between the two.
Gran Turismo 6
The PlayStaton-exclusive Gran Turismo racing series has been around since 1997 and has seen massive success with the various PlayStation systems. Gran Turismo 6 was released recently on the PlayStation 3 and provides gamers with even more great tracks and cars to jump right into.
Gran Turismo 6 has been met with praise from critics and while it is not available for next-gen consoles, it makes us wonder just how much better the series will be when a title is released for the PlayStation 4.
Formula One is an incredibly popular style of racing in Europe and its popularity has spread beyond the continent in recent years. The 2013 season was full with 11 teams and 22 drivers all racing along 19 different grand prix events. F1 2013 lets gamers jump into that competition with all of those drivers and grand prix events as well as four classic tracks.
The realistic simulation, the graphics, and the authenticity are what makes F1 2013 a fan favorite and the premier Formula One racing simulator out there.
