The action/adventure genre was full of fantastic games this year including new entries into the popular Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider, and Grand Theft Auto series as well as the newcomer The Last of Us. Earlier this week we nominated those five games and opened up a reader’s poll to see which was the favorite. Here is our winner and the results of that poll.

VGU’s Pick: The Last of Us

The Last of Us

Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic game won this genre among the VGU staff by the narrowest of margins, beating out Tomb Raider and Assassin’s Creed IV by only one vote. While all of the games were great, The Last of Us stood out as a brand-new IP that excited and surprised all of us.

The post-apocalyptic setting was nothing new but the depth of the characters and the relationships that they formed with one another (particularly between Joel and Ellie) were elements that few games before had attempted and even fewer had had success with. The fantastic setting, story, characters, graphics, and gameplay led us to choose The Last of Us as the winner in this category.

Reader’s Pick: The Last of Us

Once again the readers agreed with the VGU staff with The Last of Us taking 41.2% of the votes for the category. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag took in 23.5%, Grand Theft Auto V came in third with 17.6%, followed by Tomb Raider with 11.8%, and finally Splinter Cell: Blacklist with 5.9% of the vote.

That’s it for the best action/adventure category but VGU’s end of the year awards are far from over. Check out the winners in the other categories now and come back on Monday when we reveal nominees and open up polls for the rest of the categories including Game of the Year.
