There have been a lot of good games out this year such as The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto 5 but there have also been a lot of bad games like Dead Island Riptide and Spongebob Squarepants: Plankton’s Robotic Revenge. With that being said, these are the VGU nominees for worst game of 2013.
NBA Live 14
NBA Live was a series that ended in 2009 with NBA Live 10 despite having a mobile version available a year later. EA brought this series back from the dead in time for the next-gen console launch and was shown off on the Xbox One. It was not well received by critics. It was regarded as one of the worst games of the year and an overall bad game. IGN’s Ryan McCaffery said, “NBA Live’s flaccid return is made all the more disappointing because we waited three years for it. After all that time, NBA Live 14 in no way advances the basketball sim genre and, worse, leaves little to be optimistic about for next year.”
There have been previous attempts at Kinect fighting games but usually they don’t turn out to be great titles. With the Xbox One however, the improved Kinect sensor should have brought about a better fighting game but instead we got Fighter Within.
Fighter Within currently holds a metacritic rating of 26 out of 100, so in terms of bad games, this is one of the worst games. This Kinect title was panned universally due to its controls which were so bad, that people were comparing it to the original Kinect.
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
The Walking Dead game that came out last year was loved by critics. That game was based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman. Survival Instinct is based on the AMC television series that is related to the comic book series. This is such a bad game that the man who reviewed it continuously deals with the negative opinion from the the VGU staff due to the B+ he gave it.
This game had you controlling fan-favorite Daryl Dixon as you followed his experiences in the early days of the apocalypse. You can’t have one without the other, so Merle Dixon aka Michael Rooker makes an appearance and is nearly identical to his portrayal on The Walking Dead TV show. The gameplay was influenced by the TV show, as the use of blunt weapons like hammers or sledgehammers replaced the us of guns . Survival Instinct really does deserve its notorious reputation as one of the worst titles of this year.
Aliens: Colonial Marines
Aliens: Colonial Marines is not just a bad game but maybe the biggest disappointment of the last decade. Set up to be the “true sequel” to James Cameron’s Aliens, the title was to take place after Alien 3; instead it took place on LV-426. The first demo shown at E3 blew nearly everyone away and showed that this could be a licensed game that wouldn’t be terrible. Unfortunately, the latter rang true, as on February 12th, 2013, Aliens: Colonial Marines was released and received an awful reception; with critics slating the story of the game, which was down right terrible. VGU’s Zac Davis gave the game an “F” with the only highlight being that you could open doors and close them well.
