Sony has announced a Sly Cooper movie is in production and will be released in 2016.

The Sly Cooper movie presumably takes place after the events of the forth game, Thieves in Time, but it’s still unclear whether or not it will tie into the games. The movie is being directed by Kevin Munroe (TMNT) and produced by Rainmaker and Blockade Entertainment. The two studios are also heavily involved in the development of the already announced Ratchet and Clank movie. The official trailer, located below, doesn’t elaborate on any plot details. However, the films Facebook page contains a synopsis of the plot, including the return of Clockwork, Sly’s arch villain.

Sly Cooper is a kinetic and comedic heist film that tells the story of Sly Cooper, an orphaned raccoon thief, along with his childhood friends and partners in crime, Bentley Turtle and Murray Hippo. In the film, Sly learns of his birth family’s secret legacy; that he comes from a long line of talented and international thieves.

Endowed with this knowledge, Sly and his friends are catapulted into a global adventure as they race to reassemble pieces of an ancient book holding The Cooper Clan’s family secrets before it can fall into the hands of Clockwerk – an evil Russian metallic owl bent on ending the Cooper family line. From romantic Parisian backdrops to the lush mountains of China, gritty film noir meets bright, colorful graphic novels in this origin story of the world’s greatest thief-turned-hero.

The Sly Cooper series began on the PlayStation 2 with Sly Cooper: Thieveus Racoonous, and spawned two sequels. The series went quiet for many years while Sucker Punch started work on Infamous. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was developed by  and was released for the PlayStation 3 and Vita. The Sly Cooper Movie will be released in 2016 and will be in 3D.
